Same corner,
same knife

A Milwaukee institution since 1955, Jake's is the place in town to find authentic deli favorites, including our famous hot hand cut Corned Beef and Pastrami.

The original Jake's building has stood for well over a hundred years. It first operated as a butcher shop that opened around 1903, and thrived for many years in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood on Milwaukee's north side. In 1955, Jake Levin bought the deli from Ruben Cohen and it officially became Jake's.

Levin ran the business until his retirement in 1969, when a group of local investors — Bud Selig among them — bought the deli to keep the already famous delicatessen open and thriving. The counter has been carving meat by hand on North Avenue ever since.

Why people drive in

Nothing sits
on the shelf

Every sandwich is carved off the steam table when it is ordered. Regulars have been coming since the sixties, and visitors come off the interstate for a pound to take home.

“I've been going to Jake's since 1969. I consider Jake's hand cut corned beef and pastrami at the top.”
